Angolan President João Lourenço Inaugurates Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal

The President of the Republic of Angola, João Lourenço, recently inaugurated the Barra do Dande Ocean Terminal (TOBD), a strategic infrastructure project located in Bengo province. This state-of-the-art facility is set to enhance Angola’s fuel storage and distribution capabilities, positioning the country as a major player in the regional energy sector.

Largest Fuel Reserve Center in Angola

The TOBD boasts a storage capacity of 580,000 cubic meters of fuel, including gasoline, diesel, and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG). With this capacity, it becomes the largest fuel reserve center in Angola, ensuring a more stable and secure fuel supply for the nation.

During the inauguration ceremony, President Lourenço emphasized the importance of TOBD for Angola’s energy security. He highlighted that, with the completion of the Lobito Refinery, the country will be on the path toward fuel production self-sufficiency. Furthermore, the Cabinda Refinery is expected to be completed later this year, reinforcing Angola’s refining capacity and reducing dependence on fuel imports.

Investment and Construction Milestones

The TOBD was built on a 390-hectare site with an investment of $642 million. The project, initiated in 2012, experienced a four-year suspension before resuming in 2018. Demonstrating a commitment to local expertise, the construction workforce consisted of 96% Angolan professionals, including engineers and certified welders.

Advanced Logistics and Future Expansion

Beyond storage capacity, the terminal features a 1,700-meter pier, designed to accommodate large vessels and streamline the import and export of petroleum derivatives. Looking ahead, a second phase of expansion could increase storage capacity to 728,500 cubic meters, depending on market demand.
The inauguration of TOBD marks a significant milestone in Angola’s energy sector, reinforcing the country’s commitment to energy security, economic growth, and infrastructural development. This project will play a crucial role in ensuring a stable fuel supply and strengthening Angola’s position in the global energy market.
